The higher data rates are made possible by a transmission technology similar to PCI Express or Serial ATA, which requires two additional pairs of wires in addition to the previous data line pair (D+/D-) in the cable, plus an additional ground connection. As five additional contacts are therefore required in the connectors, USB 3.0 connectors and cables are being introduced. These type A connectors are backwards compatible with the previous ones. Existing USB devices can still be used with USB 3.0 3.0 devices can also be operated on old 2.0 or 1.0/1.1 hosts. B, mini-B, micro-B and mini-A connectors are an exception. The attachments required here mean that old plugs can be used in sockets, but not plugs in old sockets. Adapters would be required for this.
