Hans Christian Andersen reworked folk tales until they met his literary standards and could be understood by children. Based on Danish, German and Greek sagas and historical events, connected to folk beliefs and inspired by literary trends of his time, Andersen thus created the most significant art fairy tales of the Biedermeier era.
