Compared to the competition, the photo equipment is meagre - only two cameras and the app, kept relatively simple. But the main camera can deliver surprisingly good pictures even in low-light conditions. In comparison, the super-wide angle is disappointing. The DNGs, on the other hand, are convincing. So the Pixel 5 remains a smartphone for purists for whom a good camera is enough.

No more "bigger, faster, more expensive": Google is shifting down a gear - and doing a lot right.
