Djelem, djelem – moving on, always moving on... – connects, on a long musical journey, songs from travelers in Southern Spain and Eastern Europe, Orthodox chants and Russian folk songs, Sephardic love stories, and Yiddish music. The themes – love, loneliness, homelessness, sorrow, and death – are timeless and highly relevant in their timelessness. With two very different soloists, three Italian accordions, a singing viola, a fiddler, a Berlin double bass, and percussion, trumpet, oboe, and clarinet, the contrapunkt choir embarks on an exploration of the songs of the streets of Europe, in uneven rhythms, with a desire to dance in their bellies and feet, and with touching, captivating songs.
