Product details
Experiences of a construction manager and nature conservationist. Harald Helander, born in 1934, was a construction manager on large construction sites in Libya, Egypt, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and Indonesia from 1968 to 1987. He experiences the diversity of human destinies in foreign cultures. With dynamite from World War II, he blows up a bridge. To save a single desert palm tree, he relocates an entire factory. He is captured as a dangerous Israeli spy. In Indonesia, he is suspected of practicing white magic. During the eruption of Mount Semeru, he feels the hellish heat of the earth. He survives an attack by machete-wielding loggers who are deforesting the rainforests of Sumatra by diving into a raging river. He meets Abi Nachran, the martyr of the rainforest. He undertakes solo hikes of over 1,000 kilometers through Finland and Lapland in the 1950s.
