Product details

The undoubtedly most famous funeral march in music history is part of a piano sonata. In his B-flat minor sonata, Op. 35, where Chopin "coupled four of his wildest children together" (as Robert Schumann put it), the "Marche funèbre" occupies the place of the slow third movement. Early on, the funeral march— which was also composed two years before the other movements of the sonata—was performed separately, detached from its original context. Thus, this funeral march was played in an orchestrated version at Chopin's own funeral on October 30, 1849, in Paris. In addition to our edition of the complete piano sonata, Op. 35, we therefore offer this practical standalone edition of the funeral march in the proven Henle Urtext.
