Also known as sunshades or lens hoods, they keep light that would otherwise enter the lens from outside the field of view at bay. This prevents unnecessary light from being diffusely or directionally reflected off the lens surfaces and edges within the lens barrel and camera body. Such stray light can obscure the image or overlay it with light spots and ghost images, thereby degrading contrast. Lens hoods can significantly contribute to improving image quality, especially in situations with light coming in at an angle from the front and in very bright environments outside the frame.

The lens hood is an essential accessory for better images and should always be used. In addition to blocking stray light, lens hoods also provide effective mechanical protection for the sensitive front lens against raindrops, accidental contact (fingerprints significantly reduce contrast!), and some rough impacts.
