PUT stands for Programmable Unijunction Transistor. The "gate" connects the anode and cathode, which are located at the first and last p-n-doped layers. The PUT contains three p-n junctions, while a normal unijunction transistor has only one. PUTs make it easy to build oscillator circuits.
