A hardware upgrade usually requires the replacement of several components, as sockets, RAM slots, and connections are changed at regular intervals. In the course of this development, the power supply often needs to be replaced as well, since both performance and connection compatibility can no longer be guaranteed.

However, those who want to save this investment and already have a sufficiently sized PSU can also make use of adapters. This one serves to connect an older power supply to a modern motherboard.

For this purpose, the adapter features a 20-pin socket and a 4-pin ATX on the power supply side. The latter should not be confused with the 4-pin connector of the common 20+4-pin plug, as they are not compatible.

On the motherboard side, there are also two connectors available, but these are designed as plugs. Here, there is a 24-pin (not a 20+4-pin) and an 8-pin EPS12V (not a 4+4-pin) plug. The 8-pin is not compatible with 4-pin ATX connectors.
