Xiaomi is expanding its range of budget smartphones. The latest addition goes by the name Poco M4 Pro 5G. With the number of cameras and type of Gorilla Glass, you’ll have to be prepared to make a sacrifice. Still, you get a new processor including a 5G modem out of it.

Xiaomi is relying on Mediatek’s Dimensity 810, which was introduced this summer, for the Poco M4 Pro. The processor has eight cores and a Mali-G57 graphics chip. It’s built to consume less power than its predecessor and has a 5G modem. Which is why it’s intended for mid-range smartphones. The Poco M4 Pro fits into this category, but is priced at its lower end.

A 90-hertz display, two cameras and a large battery

The Poco M4 Pro 5G has a 6.6-inch display with a resolution of 2400 × 1080 pixels. The refresh rate reaches up to 90 hertz and the brightness up to 450 nits. While the Gorilla Glass 3 protective surface is stable, it isn’t the currently hardest variant from glass manufacturer Corning. There are already three more robust generations out.

There are two cameras on the back of the Poco M4 Pro – even though its design suggests five lenses. Remarkably few these days. It features a main camera with 50 megapixels and an ultra-wide-angle camera with 8 megapixels. The front camera takes selfies at 16 megapixels.

Android 11 comes installed by default on the M4 Pro. Backed up with a variant of Xiaomi’s MIUI 12.5 user interface adapted for Poco smartphones.

Its 5000 mAh battery should be fully charged in one hour with the included 33 watt power adapter. The Poco M4 Pro has two speakers and a headphone jack. The fingerprint sensor is located on the side of the smartphone.

Price and availability

The Poco M4 Pro comes in three colours: Black, Yellow and Blue. There are also two storage variants, with four gigabytes of RAM and 64 gigabytes of memory or eight and 128 gigabytes. Xiaomi plans to sell the smartphone soon. The recommended retail prices in Germany are 230 and 250 Euros for either storage variant. I don’t yet have the prices for Switzerland.
