The viral mask-proof lipstick

Nyx Professional Make-up’s «Shine Loud High Shine Lip Colors» are being celebrated on social media. Are the mask-compatible lipsticks really as good as TikTok, Instagram and Co. want us to believe?

This lipstick is an elixir of happiness. At least on social media platforms such as TikTok. There, the «Shine Loud High Shine Lip Color» lipstick by Nyx is trending and has now racked up over 67 million views under the hashtag #nyxshineloud. The reason? Apparently, it’s kiss-proof and comfortable to wear – and above all, it lasts under masks. Sounds too good to be true.

NYX Professional Make-Up Shine Loud

Brown

The «Shine Loud High Shine Lip Color» (what a name) is based on a two-step system. First you apply the lip colour and then you seal it with a gloss. The idea behind it is actually cool: it combines the benefits of matt formulas, namely pigmentation and long hold, with the nourishing comfort of a lip balm or gloss. This pairing isn’t new. But I never quite liked the concept in everyday life. Either the colour wasn’t right in terms of texture or pigmentation, or the gloss wore off so quickly that the colour underneath began to crumble. I’m still waiting for a product that convincingly puts theory into practice. In addition, I’ve barely used bright lipsticks and glossy finishes since the mask mandate. Too high the risk of smearing.

The supposed miracle lipstick by Nyx promises...

  • 16 hours of colour-intensive, kiss-proof lips. This means no fading, no smudging and that it’s even wearable under masks.
  • A vegan, nourishing formula, enriched with various oils for a pleasant feeling on the lips.
  • A high-gloss finish due to the non-sticky gloss.

I put the product to the test.

Step 1: apply pigmented base coat and let dry.

Step 2: brush a layer of gloss on top.

Application

Step 1:
I opted for the more muted colour «Magic Maker». A nuance suitable for everyday use that works well with other colours. The first thing I do is apply the base coat. This is the pigmented lipstick side of the product. The colour is rich and the texture just thin enough so that, in combination with the pointed, flexible applicator, I can precisely trace my lip contour without losing control. Nothing smudges. Initially, I was afraid that the texture would be rather dry, which would have made the application much more difficult. Fortunately, this isn’t the case.

Now, you have to wait for the coat to dry. As it dries, I make sure my lips don’t touch. Otherwise they’ll stick together and the product will turn flaky. Fortunately, the lipstick dries relatively quickly thanks to the thin texture. After just under 30 seconds, I can move on to step two: sealing the base.

Step 2:
Now it gets really interesting. The texture and applicator of the gloss are unique. At least in my collection. You apply the clear product with a brush that looks similar to a nail polish. Granted, brush applicators aren't unheard of. But this one really caresses the lips. In combination with the velvety soft gloss, it feels as if I’m putting liquid silk on my lips. In addition, the transparent top coat isn’t sticky, but rather reminds me of an oil. The more I apply, the glossier the finished look.

I like the result. I like it a lot.

Stays put for as long as you want

Up to this point, I like what I see and feel. But for how long is the question. I don’t need the promised 16 hours. I find it almost presumptuous to make this claim for a lipstick. But a long wear just sells better. Half of that – one working day – is enough for me. And the High Shine Lip Color can handle that – unless you eat greasy things. That’s when the colour on the inner edge of the lips comes off. To be fair: so far, I haven’t found a lipstick that doesn’t fall victim to greasy food. But I don’t find that a big deal, as long as the texture of the product allows me to touch up. This is possible without any problems in this case.

The lipstick survives drinks and the hand kisses that I give myself completely unscathed – as long as I’ve applied the protective gloss to the outermost edge and corner, as well as along the entire inner edge of the lips. The lipstick stays on without gloss as well, but then it can leave minimal residue on the hand or in the mask.

This is what the inside of my mask looks like after wearing it for an hour and then pressing it firmly against my mouth. What lipstick is left behind is hardly worth mentioning.

Since the gloss inevitably wears off over time, I have to refresh it regularly. Contrary to my expectations, the gloss-in-the-mask situation doesn’t feel uncomfortable at all. As long as I wear a medical mask and not a cloth one. Not even when the protective barrier slowly wears away in the mask. In the evening, I remove the product easily with an oil cleanser.

Verdict

The other two-step lipsticks I’ve tested so far can’t compare to the High Shine Lip Color. Yes, the idea isn’t new, but Nyx’s implementation is. I really enjoy the gloss. In the future, I’ll also gladly wear it without the lipstick. The lipstick colour not only holds perfectly, but also looks nice and bold for hours. If, like me, you’ve kept your hands-off bright colours and shiny finishes for a year because of mandatory masking, you’ll find your way back with Shine Loud High Shine Lip Color. Regardless of the mask, the product also takes away my fear of bright or dark, shiny colours that usually already smudge after an hour or at every opportunity. All in all, Nyx’s lipstick gives me a secure and put together feel, like no other product has so far.

As a massive Disney fan, I see the world through rose-tinted glasses. I worship series from the 90s and consider mermaids a religion. When I’m not dancing in glitter rain, I’m either hanging out at pyjama parties or sitting at my make-up table. P.S. I love you, bacon, garlic and onions.
