Breastfeeding and expressing are part of everyday life for many mothers. Hands-free breast pumps make life easier for breastfeeding mothers, as they make expressing a secondary activity instead of the main one.

The Swiss company Medela is launching the «Motion InBra», a new breast pump that is worn directly in the bra. The promise: discreet, comfortable and reliable pumping. Anytime and anywhere.

Two versions available

The «Motion InBra» is available as a single and double pump. While the single version is more suitable for occasional pumping, the double version enables simultaneous pumping on both breasts. This saves time and, according to the manufacturer, can also stimulate milk production.

Technology in a compact format

The centrepiece of the breast pump is what Medela calls «two-phase expression technology», which is designed to mimic the baby's natural sucking rhythm. In the stimulation phase, the breast is prepared for the milk flow with quick, light sucking movements before the milk is extracted with slower, stronger strokes in the expression phase.

The anatomically shaped breast shields with a 105-degree opening angle are said to produce up to 11.8 per cent more milk than conventional 90-degree shields, according to Medela.

The oval design adapts to the natural breast shape and is designed to avoid unnecessary pressure. With the included 24-millimetre breast shield and three additional silicone inserts in sizes 15, 18 and 21 millimetres, over 95 per cent of all nipple shapes should be covered.

Developed for integration into everyday life

There are only three parts to clean: Pump unit, collection container and diaphragm. With the exception of the motor unit, all parts are dishwasher-safe. They can also be cleaned with boiling water. As an option, the manufacturer offers special bags that can be used for disinfection in the microwave.

The built-in battery lasts for up to ten pumping sessions or 2.5 hours, according to the manufacturer. Charging is via USB-C cable.

With a weight of just 250 grammes and a noise level of less than 45 decibels, the pump is light and quiet enough for use in the office or in public.

An LED display shows the operating time, the different phases of pumping and the charge status.

With nine individually adjustable pumping levels and a suction force of up to -300 mmHg, there should be a suitable setting for every user.
