"The Mind": A game without instructions

"The Mind" is a co-operative game. This means that you compete against the game together with your fellow players. The rules are explained, but there are no instructions. You have to find out for yourself how to beat "The Mind".

"The Mind" was nominated for Critics' Game of the Year alongside three other games. It is more than just a game. It is supposed to be an experiment and journey with an ingenious team experience. I let myself in for it and tested this rather special game for you.

Game content:
100 number cards, 12 level cards, 5 life cards, 3 throwing star cards

Recommended age:
8 years and older

Number of players:
2 to 4 players

Playing time:
20 minutes

What are the rules of the game?

At the start of each round, all 100 number cards are shuffled. In the first round, each player receives one card, which may only be looked at by the respective player. The aim now is to place the cards in ascending order in the centre of the table without consulting the other players. Whoever thinks they have the lowest card at the time lays it down. All forms of communication are prohibited. No words, no facial expressions and no gestures.

If a player has a lower card than the one that was laid, the game is over. You have lost. However, if you complete the first round without making any mistakes, the cards are reshuffled and round two begins. The game principle remains the same, but two new cards are dealt to each player. After each successfully completed round, an additional card is played. If you manage to do this up to and including round nine, you have beaten the game and won.

The game also includes life and throwing star cards. The further you progress in the game, the more of these cards you will receive. For example, if you make a mistake, you can still continue playing by handing in a life card. However, once these are used up, the game is over. Throwing star cards can be used if you are stuck and can no longer continue. If this card is used, all players may set aside their lowest number card face up. The game then continues as normal.

What I think of the game

The game "The Mind" has rightly been nominated for a critics' award. I played it for several rounds over just under an hour. It was refreshingly unusual to play together with my fellow players and not against each other. Although I enjoyed this card game, I still don't think it's outstanding. I would play "The Mind" again if I had the chance, but I'm not really keen on it. For the low purchase price, you can definitely give this card game a try. However, I expected the reincarnation of UNO in vain.
