The "Graf Ludo 2018" goes to...

For almost 10 years now, a prize for the most beautiful game graphics has been awarded at the "modell-hobby-spiel" trade fair in Leipzig. The award is called "Graf Ludo 2018" and this year goes to "Chickwood Forest" and "Tief im Riff".
The "Graf Ludo" award is presented every year at the modell-hobby-spiel trade fair. The prize is awarded to board games that stand out for their particularly beautiful game graphics. There is one winner in each of two different categories. One prize goes to the most beautiful children's game graphics and the other to the most beautiful family game graphics.

Reasoning of the jury
"A little Nemo, a little underwater adventure, a little exoticism and a lot of Doris Matthäus. You can tell that the graphic designer has put her heart and soul into "Deep in the Reef". The cover with its deep spatiality already gives us an idea that we will discover a lot more as we swim into this reef. That's what this game is all about. It stands out from the huge range of children's games on sale. There are an incredible number of details to look at on the large game board, which nevertheless remains restrained in its entirety. The colour nuances are very well chosen for the scenario and the matt design gives the impression of being filtered through a veil of water. Despite the diversity of the biomorphic shapes, the graphic designer never loses sight of clarity and structure, which are particularly important for the smooth running of a children's game. The work of Doris Matthäus was already recognised at a time when most publishers did not even mention the names of graphic designers and illustrators. "Tief im Riff" is unmistakably typical Doris Matthäus. Like the signature of the Old Masters, she has also immortalised her little hedgehog on this game board. We won't tell you where. After all, it's a game of discovery."
Best family game graphics
Reasoning of the jury
"Chickens in Sherwood Forest, where Errol Flynn once plundered the rich in tights? That's right! The game follows the chicken tradition of the publisher, which grew up with Zicke Zacke Hühnerkacke. And so Sherwood Forest naturally became Chickwood Forest. The characters are also borrowed from the well-known film: Maid Marihenn and, of course, Robin Hahn instead of Robin Hood. The graphic concept picks up on this topic seamlessly and is perfectly realised from start to finish - coherent all round. The good guys are depicted as poor country hens, while the evil rich are birds of prey. Even the cover immediately draws the viewer into a story, more precisely into the world of Robin Hood. The colouring is also reminiscent of this, but also of children's books of the time. Chickwood Forest impresses with its small graphic and ironic gestures and many well thought-out details. As a result, the jury does not award Chickwood Forest for its boldness. Although ... if you look at the back of the cards, they show nothing more than a hen's egg with a green Robin Hood cap. An egg catcher in the best double sense of the word. Alexander Jung deserves an award for this ingenious idea alone."
