Thanks to EcoLoc: the circular bike helmet from Lazer

Dismantle and recycle instead of throwing away. The "Verde KinetiCore" from Lazer is the sustainable, circular bike helmet for the city.
The multi-award-winning "Verde KinetiCore" from Lazer was also honoured with an award at this year's Eurobike. The expert jury wrote: "The helmet scores highly in terms of sustainability and material reduction. At least 70 per cent of its weight consists of recycled materials, including discarded CDs. An innovative EcoLoc detail makes it easy to dismantle and separate the materials used at the end of their life cycle."
At the Belgian stand, I meet Jonathan Jacobs, International Account Manager at Lazer, who explains to me exactly how the "Verde KinetiCore" works.
When asked how long a bicycle helmet actually lasts, Jacobs has the following rule of thumb: "Helmets that are more than eight years old and have been in use for five of those years should be replaced. The production date can usually be found on one of the stickers on the inside of the helmet." It is also important to replace the helmet in any case after a fall. Lazer offers its own "Crash Replacement Programme" for this purpose.
Old CDs and an inconspicuous plastic part
According to Jonathan Jacobs, Lazer was primarily concerned with two points when developing the sustainable and circular bicycle helmet: Reducing CO₂ emissions in the manufacturing process and the recyclability of the raw materials used. For example, the outer shell of the "Verde KinetiCore" is made from old CDs, which are processed by a specialised company in the Netherlands. According to the manufacturer, the inner shell is made from recycled EPS foam.
"All logos are embossed into the helmet," continues Jacobs. This would make the use of stickers and other prints superfluous. The sewn straps are all made from recycled material. However, the centrepiece of the "Verde KinetiCore" is the patented EcoLoc system, which, according to Jacobs, would allow the user to completely dismantle the helmet at the end of its service life. All components can then be disposed of in accordance with local requirements and guidelines.
And this is how it works
One model today, all models in the future
If the "Verde KinetiCore" proves its worth, which Jonathan Jacobs assumes it will, all Lazer models will be gradually converted to this technology. The urban helmet, which weighs just under 400 grams, is already on the market and is also available from Galaxus.
