Testing Mont Blanc, the affordable sports sunglasses from Switzerland

Swiss Eyewear Group was founded in 2013, and has been selling high-quality glasses under the brand name Invu ever since. The company also makes sports sunglasses. I decided to give the Mont Blanc shades a try.

Self-described as Switzerland’s first eyewear company, the Zurich-based Swiss Eyewear Group has spent the last 12 years developing all sorts of glasses. While the designs are created in Switzerland, the products themselves are manufactured in China. This also applies to the company’s sports sunglasses, which, like other Swiss Eyewear Group products, are sold under the brand name Invu. The shades are now available at Galaxus.

I recently tested the Aconcagua and Omu bike glasses and wrote about them in the article linked below.

Invu Mont Blanc

I’ve now also tested the Mont Blanc sports sunglasses, which boast a pliable, unbreakable frame. Swiss Eyewear Group provided me with my pair for review purposes.

In its advertising, the manufacturer emphasises the glasses’ exceptional shatterproof properties. A flexible layer absorbs shocks, strengthening the lens structure and supposedly making the glass almost unbreakable. Invu sports glasses are ultra polarised. Equipped with this very technology, the Mont Blanc sunglasses apparently shield your eyes against harmful UV rays and offer 100 per cent UV 400 protection. According to the manufacturer, a special colour optimisation layer provides strong contrasts and optimum colour recognition. This certainly lines up with my experience.

The specs

  • Style: wrap-around
  • Lens width: 66 mm
  • Lens height: 41 mm
  • Nose bridge width: 18 mm
  • Temple length: 123 mm
  • Diameter (lens): 68 mm

For biking, mountaineering or chilling on the beach

I took the Invu Mont Blanc sports sunglasses (filter category 3) on my summer trips to the Engadin region and the North Sea as well as other places. Thanks to their wrap-around style, the shades fared well on windy beaches and mountain lakes alike. They kept wind from blowing sand into my eyes and stopped the sun’s reflections on the water from dazzling me from the side.

The sunglasses are fine for cycling too, but given their lightweight design (25 grammes), I’d rather take them on outdoor activities such as hiking, water sports or cross-country skiing. While the glasses come included with a case and a microfibre cloth, there’s unfortunately no mount for corrective lenses.

The Invu Mont Blanc sunglasses can also fit under a bike helmet.

In a nutshell

The name says it all

Swiss brand Invu makes impressive sports sunglasses, and these Mont Blanc shades are no exception. I’m particularly keen on the wrap-around style, which protects your eyes from errant grains of sand and dazzling reflections on the water. The lenses are shatterproof and scratch-resistant. Thanks to a flexible, unbreakable frame, the glasses sit comfortably on your face. Although I’d consider them good outdoor sports sunglasses, they’re less well suited to gravel- or mountain biking.

What I’m missing with the Mont Blanc – as was the case with the Aconcagua and Omu glasses – are interchangeable lenses for less sunny moments. Or alternatively, a version with photochromic lenses. With this in mind, I’ve deducted one star.

Pro

  • Decent value for money
  • Pliable frame
  • Wrap-around style
  • Shatterproof lenses
  • Lightweight

Contra

  • No interchangeable lenses for cloudy conditions
