Smart home hub sales rise significantly in 2025

Galaxus has sold over 60 per cent more smart home hubs in 2025 compared to last year. Already back in 2024, the online retailer recorded a 40 per cent increase in demand for centralised control systems in connected homes. This trend followed a boom in sales of smart speakers, sockets, heaters, blinds and the like. Cutting energy costs is one of the factors for consumers buying these products.

Smart lamps, smart thermostats, smart sockets – and a separate app for each device. What starts out as technological progress in many homes often ends in daily annoyances caused by multiple accounts and trouble keeping track of them all. This is where a more centralised approach by means of a smart home hub comes into play.

A hub acts as a control unit for several devices in connected homes. It connects sockets, blinds, door and window sensors or smart speakers from different manufacturers and allows them to be controlled and automated via one single platform. In other words, moods, schedules and processes are centralised in one place.

At Galaxus, the rising demand in smart home hubs is part of the ongoing smart home trend in recent years. In 2024, the sales figures for smart home hubs had already increased by 40 per cent compared to the previous year. In 2025, this figure has risen to 65 per cent. The online retailer has already sold a mid-five-figure number of smart home hubs this year. Now that many households are equipped with individual smart home solutions, there’s a growing demand for simplified control.

According to market research company Global Market Insights, the global smart home market will grow by ten per cent to USD 169 billion this year (page in German). Furthermore, it states that the figure is expected to be more than twice as large in ten years’ time.

Benefits of smart home hubs

Customers buying smart home devices and central control systems are also likely to be doing so with energy efficiency and cost reduction in mind – for example by automating heating schedules, time-controlling sockets or switching off power guzzlers when idle. According to the IT association Bitkom, one in two homes in Germany are already «smart» in some way. By introducing smart home elements, many consumers aim to cut heating costs and save electricity.

«People are being more and more pragmatic about how they use smart home products. An increasing number of customers are less interested in individual gadgets than in how processes can be automated and energy consumption reduced in daily life,» says Giancarlo Palmisani, Head of Association Services and member of the Executive Board of the Swiss IT association.

Taking a look at demographics reveals that smart home hubs are primarily a male interest, with 93 per cent of devices sold at Galaxus being delivered to men between 35 and 44 years of age.

What customers should look out for when buying

Shoppers looking to invest in a smart home hub should check which wireless standards it supports – these include Zigbee, Z-Wave, Thread or Matter. They should also check that it’s compatible with any devices they already own or plan to buy. Although the new standard Matter has made cross-manufacturer use easier, it doesn’t yet fully cover all device types (page in German). For customers who want to expand their smart home in the long term, it makes sense to opt for a hub that supports several standards or can be flexibly expanded.
