With the upgrade kits for the RD-M9250, Shimano is introducing a new generation of wireless shifting for 12-speed cassettes. Depending on the model, the focus is on bandwidth or ground clearance.

If you regularly ride off-road, you know: The gears are the centrepiece of your bike. It determines control, efficiency and ultimately your riding enjoyment. Shimano has developed two complete solutions with the new upgrade kits for the RD-M9250, which are designed to do just that: either for maximum range (SGS version) or for maximum ground clearance and lower weight (GS version).

They are designed for twelve-speed systems and consist of three central components:

  • RD-M9250: the new electronic XTR rear derailleur
  • SW-M9250: the matching electronic shifting unit.
  • BT-DN320: the new Di2 battery for internal mounting.

12-speed

Two sets, one system

Both upgrade kits are based on the new XTR-M9250 rear derailleur from Shimano with wireless Di2 technology. There are differences in the cage: The SGS version with a long cage is aimed at maximum gear range (for 10-51 teeth), ideal for steep climbs and long descents. The GS version with a medium-length cage is suitable for the more compact 9-45 cassette. It offers 23 millimetres more ground clearance and is primarily intended for aggressive enduro or cross-country riding.

According to the manufacturer, the rear derailleurs were designed for tough applications. Shimano relies on a robust combination of carbon plate, skid plate design and wide joints. The new wedge shape is designed to prevent you from getting stuck on side impacts. Instead, the rear derailleur should slide off in a controlled manner in the event of rock contact.

In addition, the rear derailleurs have an automatic impact protection function. After an impact, the integrated motor automatically returns the rear derailleur to its starting position.

Battery: small, powerful, removable

The included BT-DN320 battery supplies the rear derailleur with energy. It delivers 7.6 volts, 0.5 ampere hours and 3.7 watt hours. The battery is protected in the rear derailleur and can be completely removed if required. It is charged via the compact EC-EN100 charger, which is also included in the set.
