Binoculars that prove their worth in difficult lighting conditions. That's what Nikon promises with the "Monarch 5". I had them with me for two days in the Grisons mountains and am satisfied.

The "Monarch 5" binoculars from Nikon are designed to prove their worth in difficult lighting conditions. The manufacturer promises this. It also offers what is important for hunters and nature lovers: a sharp, bright image, a robust design and comfortable handling. Well then. I spent two days travelling in the Piz Beverin region with the Monarch 5 and three experienced hunters.

The weather is good, the sun is shining. No problem for the Monarch 5 with ten times magnification and a lens diameter of 42 millimetres (10 x 42). The larger the diameter of the front lens, the more light is collected. 20 to 32 mm are suitable for daytime observations, 40 to 80 mm for unfavourable light conditions such as twilight. Small binoculars guide: What you need to look out for when buying

    by Theresa Schieder

I wear glasses and go through the world farsighted due to my age. Unfortunately, this is not to be understood figuratively. In concrete terms, it means I can see well into the distance, but not so well at working distance and without glasses I'm blind as a bat when it comes to reading. So glasses off, binoculars up. And there it is, the marmot, about 100 metres away from me. The pictures were taken by photographer Manuel Wenk, but that's pretty much how you have to imagine it.

The Monarch 5 also performed well for my needs at dawn and dusk. It brightens the image slightly, but of course has nothing remotely to do with a night vision device. I'm not a hunter, I just like being out in nature. The colleague next to me uses binoculars from Swarovski, which also have a rangefinder built in. However, they cost over 3,000 francs.

First impression

I spent two days travelling with a good pair of binoculars, which I can use to scan the surroundings for animals in sunshine and at dawn and dusk. The Monarch 5 comes with a bag, carrying strap and covers for the lens and eyepiece. As it is not raining or foggy, I cannot provide any information on these conditions.
