Mirror, mirror on the wall

Large, small, angular, round, minimalist or playful... Mirrors are no longer just functional helpers in the bathroom. You can use them both as a decorative element and as an aid to make your cramped bedroom or narrow corridor appear larger and brighter. In this article, you can find out how mirrors can transform your rooms and how best to install them.
The corridor
Windowless and gloomy, full of shoes, bags and clothes and often cramped: the average corridor. A mirror can help. If your hallway is very narrow, install a mirror on the long side. If it is rather short, place a mirror opposite the entrance door. To make it bright, a lot of light should be reflected. The easiest way to do this is with a floor lamp or light coming in from another room.
Tip:
Get a mirror with integrated storage areas such as shelves or drawers for the hallway. In addition to brightness, this will also help you keep things tidy.
The living room
Lavish and massive mirrors find their place here above the sofa and the fireplace. Another favourite: hang the mirror between two doors to give the impression that you are looking into another room.
Tip:
Be bold! Your mirror doesn't always have to match the rest of the living room decor. Create an interesting contrast to your modern furnishings with a playful, gold or silver-coloured mirror.
The dining area
It doesn't take much to visually enlarge your dining room or dining area. Hang a mirror in landscape format on the wall along the length of the table or, alternatively, place a mirror above the sideboard.
Tip:
Create lighting effects and atmosphere with candles on the sideboard or thanks to candle holders on the frame of the mirror.
The bedroom
Ideally, your wardrobes should already have floor-to-ceiling mirrors to skilfully reflect the morning light.
Tip:
No mirror on the wardrobe? Get a large standing mirror. This can either be placed in the corner or, if you have enough space, in the room.
The bathroom
The bathroom mirror is primarily used for applying make-up or shaving and for straightening hair. Good lighting is therefore essential. A mirror can also create more visual space here, for example by mirroring the entire wall above the washbasin. But be careful, this should be done by a professional! Also always suitable for the bathroom: vanity mirrors.
Tip:
Not in the mood to mirror the whole wall? Then stick-on mirror tiles might be something for you and are child's play to install.
The right installation
Mirrors are usually relatively heavy, so you need to take particular care when mounting them. Wall mirrors should only be mounted with suitable screws or brackets. If they are attached to walls, you will need screws and wall plugs. Wood screws are sufficient on wooden surfaces. If you want to attach cosmetic mirrors or mirror plates, for example, you are well advised to use mounting adhesive. A spirit level is a great help. Want to be on the safe side? Then have your mirror installed by a professional.

My home is adorned with a Vitra elephant, a Kartell bedside table and an Eames plastic armchair. It's a good thing that I can live out my passion so well in my job. As a furniture buying manager, I put my heart and soul into buying great pieces of furniture that can beautifully enhance one home or another. As a counterbalance, I play tenor horn in a Guggenmusik, like to meet with friends or ferment wheat to make healthy smoothies.
