Make some room! "GTA 6" requires 212 gigabytes of storage
You have two weeks left to clean up your hard drive. Then 'GTA 6' will be released, and it will consume a huge amount of storage.
The pre-load for «GTA 6» starts on November 10. That's when you can download Rockstar's latest work to start playing right at launch at midnight on November 19. You might need to clear out your hard drive first, though. The game requires a massive 212 gigabytes of storage. That's about a third of the total space available on a standard PS5. On the Xbox Series X, you could at least install almost four «GTA 6» titles.
However, the game world is said to be larger than those of «GTA 4», «GTA 5», and «Red Dead Redemption 2» combined, Rockstar told Edge Magazine. Combined with the level of detail shown in the half-hour gameplay trailer, the storage requirement is not surprising.
If you're thinking, "Wow, that's a lot of space for one game," there are even hungrier storage hogs out there. The «Call of Duty» launcher has grown into a monster since the introduction of «Warzone». If you install the campaign and all multiplayer modes, you'll reach over 250 gigabytes. "Hold my beer," says «ARK: Survival Evolved», which demands over 400 gigabytes if you install all the DLCs. These are all child's play compared to «Digital Combat Simulator», or DCS World for short. A game I had never heard of until today. It is a flight simulation that, depending on the number of expansions and maps, drifts into realms far beyond 500 gigabytes.
A 1-terabyte SSD currently retails for more than 200 CHF or Euros. This means that «GTA 6» will cost you the equivalent of 40 francs in storage "parking fees." Unlike in the game, unfortunately, you won't be able to simply avoid paying that.
As a child, I wasn't allowed to have any consoles. It was only with the arrival of the family's 486 PC that the magical world of gaming opened up to me. Today, I'm overcompensating accordingly. Only a lack of time and money prevents me from trying out every game there is and decorating my shelf with rare retro consoles.
