Hasbro discontinues its toy recycling programme in Switzerland
Despite its reputation as a world recycling champion, the Hasbro recycling programme for old and broken toys was not well received in Switzerland. After a year and a half, the programme is being cancelled.
The end is just a few weeks away. You can send in your old, non-electric Hasbro toys free of charge until 9 June to have them recycled. After that, the toy manufacturer's sustainability programme will be discontinued - at least in Switzerland.
The reason for this is a lack of interest, according to TerraCycle. The international company is responsible for recycling Hasbro products. "Compared to other countries, the commitment of participants in the recycling programme was limited." However, the partnership with Hasbro will continue, TerraCycle emphasises, with other European countries such as Germany, Austria, the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands, Sweden and Denmark. Switzerland of all countries, however, which is often referred to as the world champion in recycling, has made too little use of the Hasbro programme.
Second toy life and monetary donations
The Hasbro recycling programme was launched in the USA in 2018 and has also existed in Switzerland since October 2021. "The goal of the recycling initiative is to save toys and games from incineration and instead recycle the materials and protect the environment," the toy manufacturer wrote in a press release at the time of the launch in Switzerland.
TerraCycle breaks the toys down into their individual parts, separates the materials such as plastics or metals from each other and returns the individual parts to a raw material-like state. Hasbro can then reuse the recycled materials for its production.
Those who take part in the programme are not only doing good for the environment: points are credited to the customer account for each toy delivery, which can then be converted into monetary donations for charitable organisations or schools and kindergartens.
Last chance to get your hands on labels
Would you like to take advantage of the offer in the last few days and give your used or broken Hasbro toy a second life? To be able to send your toy by parcel, you must first create an account on Terracycle.com and order pre-paid return labels. Please note: Battery-operated toys are excluded, here you can find a list with more information.
