Ford F-150 Electric: First pictures of the electric pickup
by Dominik Bärlocher
Who wants petrol? In a side note at a press conference, Dodge's CEO Mike Manley announced an electric Dodge RAM.
It was only a matter of time before Dodge - a latecomer to the inevitable switch to electric motors - electrified its first American flagship. However, the fact that it will be the pickup truck with the iconic name Dodge RAM comes as a surprise. Or maybe not, as Ford converted its flagship truck, the F-150, to electric just a few weeks ago.
This makes the last major truck, along with a few competitors, electric.
Dodge is bringing up the rear in the race to switch from big, rumbling V8 engines with astronomically high fuel consumption. The Dodge RAM had a fuel consumption of 18.1 litres unleaded per 100 kilometres overland. Had. Because the Detroit Free Press reports that Mike Manley, CEO of Fiat Chrylser Group - owner of the Dodge brand - said the following during a virtual press event on third quarter 2020 earnings:
I see a place in the market for an electric RAM pickup. But I ask that you wait a little while longer and then we can tell you exactly when that will happen.
This means that Dodge is facing new and old competition. There is not only Ford, who have made waves with their F-150 Electric, but also Tesla with the Cybertruck, Rivian with the R1T, GMC recently electrified the Hummer and the Lordstown Endurance also still exists.
And if the Hummer didn't sound really good as it is; everything sounds better with the Immigrant Song.
It seems that the 2021 and 2022 model years will be the years of the truck and the battle will not only be fought in terms of range. The Hummer has a sloping drive, the Ford F-150 will probably be more or less a flat on wheels. The Cybertruck is a Tesla and therefore a prestige object and eye-catcher apart from all the features.
With Fiat Chrysler, i.e. Dodge, electric mobility is making further inroads into the world of American muscle cars. The question now is: after the Dodge RAM Electric, when will the electric Challenger arrive?
