The e-bike helmet with red light district

The Giro Camden looks like it's about to burn out. Yet it is quite well ventilated and has some useful safety features for fast e-bikers.
When the entire back of the head lights up, it looks slightly futuristic. As if the helmet were performing a brain scan on the side. In any case, the large red light is an eye-catcher. Otherwise, the Giro Camden in matt black is quite inconspicuous. You won't even notice the integrated light when it's switched off. What else is inside?
A helmet for high speeds
The Giro Camden fulfils the Dutch NTA 8776 standard for S-pedelec helmets. These helmets are designed for fast e-bikes up to 45 km/h. They are tested at around 20 per cent higher impact speeds than "normal" bike helmets, which comply with EU standard EN 1078 and with which you are also allowed to ride S-pedelecs. Models like the Camden can simply take even more and are therefore recommended at high speeds.

The helmet is a hybrid construction. The upper part is made in hardshell construction, whereby the hard outer shell is bonded to the cushioning inner shell. This has the advantage that a complex ventilation system can be integrated. At the sides, the outer and inner shells are "bonded" together using the in-mould process. This makes it lighter and thinner in these areas. The Giro Camden also has integrated MIPS. The "Multi-directional Impact Protection System" is designed to prevent the brain from being subjected to excessive rotational movements when the head hits the side. This is why there are movable elements in the helmet that can move in the opposite direction to the shell in the event of a fall.
Practical experience
I have worn the helmet accident-free for a few days and can say: Hybrid construction or not, it is massive. Not a lightweight. Depending on the size, it weighs +/- 750 grams. This is at the upper end of the scale, even for e-bike helmets, and can mainly be explained by the fact that it is designed for high speeds and contains a light and battery. You will feel this weight at first if you are used to a normal bike helmet. In addition, the Camden is pulled far down at the temples and the edge of the helmet is also present in the field of vision. This increases safety, but is a bit like a turtle shell. Nevertheless, it feels surprisingly airy to wear.

This is partly due to the ten ventilation slots, of which you can adjust and close the top four. Secondly, the "Roc Loc Air Fit System", which provides a little distance between the skullcap and the inner shell and improves the draught through the resulting wind tunnels. I also liked the magnetic Fidlock fastener, which is easy to operate with one hand.
First impression
If you are looking for a high-quality e-bike helmet with light and are not afraid of a little extra weight, the Giro Camden is an option. Simple and reasonably elegant in appearance, airy to wear and well equipped. The lighting is nicely integrated, with two flashing modes in addition to continuous light. The only thing you really have to do without is a visor. Corresponding helmets with a protective visor can be found here.

As a film buff, I didn't notice. "It looks like the helmet from Starship Troopers!", says my colleague Patrick Bardelli as if shot from the Morita MK1. That's right!
