Charging your electric car – now with a Galaxus charging cable

I was against it. I was outvoted. And yet, I’ll briefly introduce it anyway – the new 22-kilowatt charging cable from Galaxus’s own brand.

Charging stations are becoming increasingly common. Many – especially fast chargers – already have cables. However, there are still some public charging points where you need to connect your own. And you’ll also need one for your wall box at home.

Charging cables like these used to be a real goldmine for car manufacturers. They were sold at exorbitant prices of up to 500 Swiss francs with new cars. Now, though, the market’s more competitive, so nobody has to buy the overpriced brand cable anymore.

Galaxus now offers its own charging cable for electric cars. As always, it’s fairly priced and of good quality that’s been carefully tested, and there’s a choice of three lengths: 3, 5 and 7.5 metres.

And, as stated in the specifications, it’s a 22-kilowatt cable. I’d made the case for an 11-kilowatt model. Why? Because that’s plenty in the vast majority of cases. It’s easily enough to fully recharge an electric car with an 80-kilowatt-hour battery overnight. Furthermore, a lot of popular electric cars on Swiss roads are limited anyway and only charge at 11 kilowatts in AC mode.

The reason for this is the on-board charger, or OBC. The VW ID family and its sister brands Skoda and Cupra, the Tesla Model 3 and Y, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and 6 and the Kia EV6 all have an OBC charging limit. In contrast, Renault and premium manufacturers including Mercedes, Audi, BMW and Volvo don’t – sometimes offering it as an optional extra with a new car.

A 22-kilowatt cable is also thicker, making it heavier. But nobody listens to me. Partly because the sales figures are against me: Swiss customers prefer something with a bit more oomph. Just like cars here are always slightly more powerful than they need to be for a motorway speed limit of 120 km/h.

Chunky, but good

Even though we’re marking the launch of our own brand in the electric vehicle sector with a bulky cable, it’s a good one. I can say that with certainty because I was able to test it. I – or rather my Enyaq – also featured in the photos on the product page. What’s most important to me, though, is that the connector feels good to hold and can survive being dropped on the ground.
