Beyblade is back and I'm like: "What?"

One of my favourite games from my youth is back in fashion. Beyblade. Oh, how I loved those things. As the intro to the anime series of the same name said: "The whole world revolves around Beyblade!"

Lately I visited Google in Zurich and gained some interesting insights into search terms in Switzerland. Among other things, it was clear that Beyblade has been searched for more and more frequently over the past two years and that it has already become a trend. I was amazed and wanted to know how Beyblade was selling on Galaxus. We are also seeing a growing interest in the spinning tops.

The first time Beyblade appeared on the surface of the earth was in 1999 with the manga of the same name by Takao Aoki. These comics were subsequently made into a film and translated into several languages as an anime series. This resulted in a worldwide hype and the Beyblade, originally intended as merchandise, were bought en masse. Between 2000 and 2005, Beyblade was one of the most popular games in the world and over 100 million copies were sold.

I was just as fond of Beyblade back then as all young people my age. Everyone had one in their jacket pocket and was always ready for a battle in the school playground. Back then, we tried to optimise our Beyblades in every conceivable way to make them invincible. We used metal spikes, increased or decreased their weight and tinkered with the starters to make the spinning tops spin faster. There were a lot of opponents who wanted to take me on. Some won, but many didn't. This trend lasted just under a year or two for us. I have fond memories of that time when we were racing in backyards and subways. They were hard-fought battles and there were few rules. But one thing always applied: the loser had to give his Beyblade to the winner. Boy, did I have a lot of them at home! 😀
