Available for pre-order now: the "Ocarina of Time" remake for the Switch 2
In November, you can experience the nearly 30-year-old Nintendo 64 game 'Ocarina of Time' anew in a beautiful guise.
Many «Zelda» fans are looking forward to this release: «Ocarina of Time» from 1998, one of the most popular games in the series, is receiving an official remake for the Switch 2 on November 5th. The gameplay remains largely faithful to the original, while Nintendo has completely overhauled the graphics. This includes new details as well as significantly more elaborate fog and lighting effects.
What «Ocarina of Time» is about
You step into the role of young Link, who grows up in the forest with the mysterious Kokiri people. Your life changes when the Great Deku Tree, the protector of the forest, calls for you. An evil force is afflicting him, and only you can help. This begins a journey that takes you to every corner of the land of Hyrule and even through time to oppose the plans of the dark Ganondorf.
During your adventure, you will meet Princess Zelda and various eccentric characters. With the help of an ocarina, you can influence the flow of time. You also get Epona, a loyal horse that reliably carries you across Hyrule Field.
Unlike the two more recent open-world titles in the series, «Breath of the Wild» (2017) and «Tears of the Kingdom» (2023), «Ocarina of Time» is primarily linear. You complete the dungeons and the story largely in a fixed order. Nevertheless, there remains plenty of room to explore the world and its secrets.
The best game of all time?
The original captivated millions of people with its expansive world and compelling story. On the platform Metacritic, the title holds the number 1 spot in the ranking of the best games of all time. In the Digitec ranking of the 100 best games, «Ocarina of Time» takes second place.
«Ocarina of Time» was the first 3D game in the «Zelda» series and popularized the then-novel Z-targeting. This allows you to lock onto enemies, which makes combat significantly easier to manage.
In addition to the significantly improved graphics, the remake also features a few gameplay innovations: Link can now jump actively, and you use the controller's motion controls when aiming with the bow and arrow. Nintendo is releasing the game to mark the 40th anniversary of «The Legend of Zelda».
