A breast pump! But which one?

Breast pumps are still highly controversial. Some swear by the pump, others give it a wide berth. I'll help you through the jungle of breast pumps and introduce you to our three favourite brands: Ardo, Avent and Medela.

Breast milk is the best food for babies and it is recommended that babies are fed exclusively with breast milk for the first six months. The use of a breast pump can therefore make sense for various reasons. These include problems with latching on, insufficient milk production, an excess of milk, a baby who sucks too weakly, breast infections (such as mastitis), nipple irritation, but also going to work or the need to spend an evening without a baby. Whether it's a medical or personal reason, it allows you as a mum to continue supplying your baby with breast milk and still be flexible and free.

Types of breast pumps

Manual breast pump
As the name suggests, a manual breast pump is operated by hand. This means you don't need batteries or a plug socket. This type of breast pump is therefore ideal if you only need it occasionally, want to remain flexible or want to use it as a supplement to an electric pump. Thanks to its compact size, you can easily store it in your bag and take it with you wherever you go. It gives you the flexibility and freedom you need to go out on your own without your child having to go without breast milk.

Electric breast pump
The electric version is generally more expensive than manual breast pumps, but more suitable for everyday use. However, most models can be operated not only via electricity, but also with batteries or rechargeable batteries for emergencies. The advantage of a double breast pump is that you save time. This is because both breasts are pumped in parallel. According to Medela, double-sided pumping also means that 18% more milk can be expressed - not just double the amount. The fat content of the milk is also higher with this variant.

In addition to the option for one-sided pumping, some of the large sets also include bottles, different breast bell sizes and cooling or travel bags for optimal milk storage. Before buying, be aware of what you expect from the breast pump and how often you want to use it. That way, you won't choose the wrong product.

Tip: If necessary, electric breast pumps can also be tested or rented in pharmacies. If the use of a breast pump has been prescribed by a doctor, some health insurance companies will contribute to the purchase or hire of a breast pump. In this case, it is worth making the necessary clarifications with your health insurance provider in advance so that you are not suddenly stuck with the entire purchase costs.
