The origin of OBEY can be found in the ideals of the founder Shepard Fairey. In 1989, while studying at the Rhode Island School of Design, he designed a sticker that became a worldwide street art hit. OBEY Clothing was created in 2001 with the goal of using clothing to make his art and message more accessible to people. OBEY is inspired by classic military design, workwear, and the elements and cultural movements Shepard has focused on in his art career. OBEY is about diversity and experience, thinking about his environment and questioning his purpose. The medium is the message!
