Luxurious hair: a quick guide to hair masks
Hair masks make your hair look lush and luminous in no time. Applied properly, they prevent damage and make sure your hair stays healthy. Read on to find out everything you need to know about hair masks.
Your hair has a number of natural enemies: dry, warm air, beach holidays, aggressive bleaching, hair straighteners and many more. The saving grace? Hair masks. Offering intense care and repairing damaged hair in no time, hair masks are your perfect home remedy.
Hair masks and treatments both aim to restore and repair damaged hair and make it look strong again. However, while treatments may include tinctures or capsules that are applied over a defined number of weeks or months, hair masks are used in the shower and show immediate effect after using them once. These «traditional» hair masks are subject of this article.
How to apply a hair mask correctly
Hair masks can be used as a one-off remedy or on a regular basis to prevent damage to your hair. Make sure not to apply a hair mask more often than once a week, as this may cause your hair to lose its natural volume or increase sebum production, which makes your hair greasy.
A hair mask should be applied to washed and towel-dried hair. Use about a walnut-sized amount and massage it evenly throughout your hair and tips. Use a bit more than this for long and thick hair. How long to leave the mask on depends on the product you’re using. Once it’s processed for long enough, wash it out thoroughly.
Tip: The effectiveness of the hair mask can be boosted by wrapping your hair with a warm towel.
What does your hair need?
Just as with your skin, your hair has a large variety of needs and potential lacks. Personally, I own several masks and use them in turns to make sure my hair gets everything it needs.
These five aspects are especially important for your hair and need to be considered when choosing a hair mask:
Heat or colour-treated hair
If you colour your hair regularly or use a hair straightener or curling iron, go for a mask that helps restore nutrients and moisture from the inside, repairs damage caused by heat and reduces colour fading.
Gliss Kur Fiber Therapy Struktur Reparatur (Haarkur, 300ml)
The formula with groundbreaking Omegaplex reconstructs damaged compounds in the hair fibers to strengthen the inner hair structure.
Dry, brittle hair
If your hair is lacking moisture and oils to keep it smooth and silky, you’ll need intense care to repair it. Go for a conditioning mask that provides deep hydration, nourishes your hair from the inside and makes it look silky and soft.
Richesse d'Argan (Haarkur, 300ml)
Dull, lackluster hair
Reasons for dull hair can be a combination of lack of nutrients, excessive styling with products or a hot straightener and build up on the scalp, causing a dandruff-like condition to form. Go for a mask that helps remove scaly build up, allowing the light to reflect from your hair and make it look shiny and full.
Geranium Radiance Remedy (Haarkur, 200ml)
If your hair is lacking volume – be it because you have fine hair or even hair loss – you should choose a mask that boost hair growth and doesn’t weigh down your hair. This will make your hair look fuller and give it volume and resiliency.
Densifique Masque Densite (Haarkur, 200ml)
Condensing care mask for hair fullness with infinite bounce & vitality
Bleaching your hair can raise the cuticle scales and allow rapid and continuous loss of moisture. There are hair masks that are especially made to restore and repair bleached hair. They take the yellow tone out, nourish your hair and provide all the moisture and care it needs.
Karite (Haarkur, 100ml)
