Damels in distress! 3 men’s beauty products to the rescue

You’re (unexpectedly) spending the night at your boyfriend/date/ lover’s place. It dawns on you that you’ve come totally unprepared. Check his bathroom cabinet – you’re bound to find things to improvise with.

There are moments in life when you could kick yourself for doing a terrible job of packing. At least that’s how I felt when I was still in that rose-tinted but totally impractical phase with my boyfriend. That phase when you refuse to leave anything at his place and prefer to lug everything back and forth like a nomad. In reality I just kept forgetting stuff. Elementary stuff. Like my moisturiser, make-up brush or make-up remover. But as we all know, necessity is the mother of invention. And so I turned to men’s products to save me. Time to get creative.

After shave care aka hardcore primer

It was YouTube make-up guru Nikkie Tutorials who first introduced Nivea After Shave Balm as THE primer to the beauty scene. The story behind it: Out of necessity, she used her boyfriend’s beauty product and found out it worked better for her than any of the conventional primers. Not least because of its high glycerine content (second leading ingredient), which makes foundation last longer. If you’re worried about smelling too masculine – the manly fragrance evaporates relatively quickly after applying the balm. I’ve tried this several times myself and was happy with the results. Men’s facial care is also great as a substitute for your moisturiser. But because of its clumsy bottle (similar to glass ketchup bottles), I soon banished after shave balm from my daily beauty routine. For me, it still is an emergency product.

A brush is a brush

You’ve left your brush at home and your boyfriend’s a bit of a hipster? Try using his shaving brush (provided you’ve got your powder compact on you). The experience is a bit rough but it does work. Don’t worry about using anything colourful like rouge – the brush will be soaped up and washed before your sweetheart’s next shave anyway.

Remove your make-up no matter what

We accept no excuses when it comes to removing make-up! Your skin needs to be cleansed. End of. Worst case, men’s shaving cream will make do. But be careful with it. Shaving cream often contains ingredients that can cause allergies in sensitive areas. So only use it on your skin and avoid eye area.

Directions: Apply a walnut-sized blob of shaving foam to your face and work it into your skin with a little water. Ideally, remove it with a warm wet flannel. If you don’t have one at hand, thoroughly rinse off with warm water. Waterproof eye make-up is best removed with coconut or olive oil. If you don’t mind having an oily face, cleanse your entire face with said oils. Personally, I tend to go for the latter method. But it’s not for everyone, hence the shaving cream tip.

As a massive Disney fan, I see the world through rose-tinted glasses. I worship series from the 90s and consider mermaids a religion. When I’m not dancing in glitter rain, I’m either hanging out at pyjama parties or sitting at my make-up table. P.S. I love you, bacon, garlic and onions.
