Despite the disadvantages, the Oregon 750T is still the best GPS you can buy for geocaching.

I have been using various Garmin GPS for geocaching for over 12 years. In recent years mostly a Montana. The Montana battery with 7.4Wh lasts a good day, the Oregon battery with 4.8Wh doesn't last as long, so I ordered a second one. The topoactive map on the Oregon 750t gets updates via Garmin Express, supposedly twice a year! That was a very positive surprise for me, as there was nothing like that for the old topo maps. A comparison of the Topoactive map on the Oregon 750t with the additionally purchased TOPO Switzerland PRO brought another surprise. In the local forest, the Topoactive map on the GPS showed all the existing paths. However, on the optional TOPO Switzerland PRO, which costs Fr. 399.-, the trails are missing, only the forest paths are shown. The trail network on the internal GPS map seems to be better than on the expensive optional TOPO Switzerland PRO. Unfortunately, the internal topoactive map does not show any contour lines, so I prefer to use the TOPO Switzerland PRO. The Oregon can obtain live data from Geocaching.com via WLAN or with Bluetooth via smartphone. To do this, you first have to register the GPS with Geocaching.com, but that was no problem. The Garmin Connect app is needed for the connection with the smartphone. This way, you can get current geocache data on the go and actually log the cache at the same time. But unfortunately you can't enter a log text! Only the standard text: "Submitted via Garmin Oregon 7xx" is transmitted as the cache log. This makes the Geocaching Live function useless and you cannot switch it to Fieldnote. Unfortunately you have to switch off the "Auto Upload Logs" function, which is active by default. My Oregon had firmware version 2.8 and map version 3.0 installed. The disadvantages could be remedied via software updates, if Garmin wants to.

    Pro

    • Internal topoactive map with very good trail network
    • Internal topoactive map gets updates twice a year
    • Live Geocaching via Bluetooth and smartphone.
    • Live weather radar via Bluetooth and smartphone.

    Contra

    • Only standard log text for live geocaching.
    • Modest battery performance
    • Internal topoactive map has no contour lines
    • Optional TOPO Switzerland PRO is very expensive and has a modest network of paths.

a top device for geocachers and hikers who need reliable navigation

I already had the predecessor, the Oregon 650t, and was therefore curious to see what new features Garmin had packed into the 700 series. Visually, the 750 is almost indistinguishable from the 650, which is good, because then all the accessories from the predecessor will still fit. Since I use the GPS primarily for geocaching, I was naturally curious about the new Geocaching Live function. Geocaches no longer have to be copied to the device offline via a PC, but you can request geocache data online directly from the map via Bluetooth or WLAN, which is a great improvement!

I didn't find the new "activities" interface any better than the old one, it's good that you can switch it off. So I could take over my old shortcuts and icons 1:1 from the old GPS and didn't have to familiarise myself with it again.

    Pro

    • Very robust
    • OSM map included in the scope of delivery is almost as good as the expensive Swisstopo map
    • Geocaching Live feature is a huge help when caching
    • old accessories (brackets) can be taken over
    • Easy to operate touch screen

    Contra

    • Clunky and small screen compared to smartphones
    • Speed of image build-up and menu build-up better than the predecessor, but could be faster

    Robust outdoor GPS

Although Garmin is the market leader for such devices, they still can't manage to develop a device that doesn't get stuck or crash every now and then. I had the same problem with the previous devices. Otherwise, the device does what it is supposed to do.

    Pro

    • robust device
    • waterproof
    • Thanks to the connection to the mobile phone, I can also download current geocache data on the road

    Contra

    • Stops or crashes every now and then
