A quick guide to buying snowshoes

Are you up for trying out something new this winter? Give snowshoeing a go! Snowshoes distribute your weight over a larger area and keep your feet from sinking completely into the snow. This makes it possible to explore snow-covered landscapes far off from the slopes. Snowshoeing is easy to learn and a great deep powder snow experience for anyone.

Here’s what you need to know before you buy your own pair of snowshoes.

Bindings

There are two styles of binding: with straps and with ratchets. Strap bindings fasten your foot without squeezing it and are ideal for soft footwear. Ratchet bindings are more comfortable and quicker to use, but require shoes with a firm back.

Sizes

Snowshoe size charts seem complicated at first, but are actually quite simple. The sizes are given in inches (1 inch = 2.54 cm). To find out your size, it’s not your shoe size that matters, but the total weight (including all your gear) and the snow condition.

If you weigh less than 70 kg, size 22 will fit you. If you weigh between 70 and 100 kg, size 25 is suitable. For more than 100 kg weight, go with size 30.

If you’re planning to hike in untouched powder snow, choose larger snowshoes. There are no size differences in snowshoes for men and women, but women's models can be slightly narrower.

For adventurers

Featuring heel elevators, traction rails and toe crampon, these models will get you up steep ascents. The sky is the limit!

I love black humour, my small collection of jackets, Red Bull, furniture, lie-ins, British accents, dogs, laughing until I cry, Polaroid cameras, full ice-hockey stadiums and that moment when the red lamp lights up behind the right goal. Singing songs loudly and out of tune (and busting some matching moves) is also something I enjoy – as is strumming around on my guitar.

User dearheart

What I miss in information and find judicious: "It is not your show size that matters".
I used 45 since 10 years old, and now 50 and can't find shoes.
When 10, i would walk on snow without dropping through.
Now I am heavier, but like to know if the snowshoes will support shoes of size 50.
