How to pick the right KitchenAid food processor

To this day, KitchenAid is still one of the most popular brands when it comes to food processors. Given the fast-moving pace at KitchenAid, it is easy to lose track of all the appliances in the range. For instance, they regularly launch new versions and colours and some appliances get discontinued. That’s why we decided to put together an overview of all the current models along with their features.

KitchenAid food processors are available in different shapes and sizes, from the compact Mini for single-person households to the popular Artisan and the high-performance Professional with extra-large capacity. Some features of KitchenAid food processors are the same across the board:

Metal casing

All of the machines have a casing made of die-cast metal, which is why they are so robust and long-lasting. Thanks to their relatively large weight, they don’t go skidding across the worktop when you’re mixing a tough bit of dough.

Direct-drive

KitchenAid food processors are all designed so the motor is in the head of the machine. This lets you get the most out of the accessories and attachments.

Motor head

It is easy to tilt the motor head up on all the KitchenAid models. This makes changing mixing bowls and accessories as easy as pie.

Planetary action

The planetary stirring action on all the models allows the kneading and stirring accessories go round in a circle and turn on their own axis. This ensures they regularly touch the sides of the bowl to prevent any dead corners.

Accessories

You can add various accessories to the attachment hub on the head of the kitchen machine to give you more functions. As a general rule, all KitchenAid accessories that can be added to the attachment hub (e.g. pasta attachment, grater, mincer) will work with any KitchenAid food processor.

The only exceptions are the bowls and mixing tools. The bowls and mixing tools on the KSM125, KSM150 and KSM175 models are compatible with each other. You only need different bowls and stirring paddles for the Professional and Mini models.

Let’s take a closer look at some KitchenAid models

The most popular and important models in the KitchenAid food processor range are the Artisan KSM125, Artisan KSM150, Artisan KSM175, the Professional and KitchenAid Mini. The main differences between the individual models are what they come with, the design and number of colours you can choose from. These are explained in more detail below.

KitchenAid Artisan KSM150

  • What it comes with: four accessories, one bowl (4.8 l) and one cookbook
  • Available colours: 30
  • Motor power: 300 W
  • Misc.: predecessor of the KSM125 and KSM175; design altered slightly on the newer models

The Artisan KSM150 is the predecessor to the more recent KSM125 and KSM175 models. The main differences are what they come with and the colours you can choose from. The design of the latter Artisan KSM125 and Artisan KSM175 models has also been altered slightly and the tool holder improved. Generally speaking, all of the add-on parts are compatible with all models.

The Artisan KSM150 comes with a 4.8 l bowl and the same accessories (flat beater, dough hook and egg whip) as the Artisan KSM125. The KSM150 also comes with a splash guard and a cookbook. This model was originally available in 30 different colours. As it is not made any more, there aren’t as many options.

The KSM175 is available in 22 different colours. Compared with the other two models (not sets), the KSM175 has an extra 3.3 l stainless steel bowl. As with the KSM150 (but not the KSM125) the KSM175 also comes with a recipe book and a splash guard.

KitchenAid Mini

  • What it comes with: three accessories, one bowl (3.3 l)
  • Motor power: 250 W
  • Available colours: six
  • Misc.: intended primarily for single-person households

The Mini version comes in the classic KitchenAid design and is available in six different colours. It is much smaller and lighter than the other models, making it perfect for single-person households. But KitchenAid haven’t cut any corners when it comes to the range of functions. The Mini can do everything its bigger siblings can. The only thing to bear in mind is the 3.3 l bowl seems a bit smaller and larger bowls are not compatible with this version.

Comparing KitchenAid models

In summary, the KSM125, KSM150 and KSM175 are identical when it comes to performance (300 W), while the Professional has a slightly stronger motor (500 W) and the Mini a slightly weaker one (250 W). All of the accessories (e.g. pasta attachment, grater, mincer, etc.) that can be added to the attachment hub are compatible with all the models (even the Professional and the Mini). However, you do need different bowls and mixing tools for the KitchenAid Professional and Mini. If you’re interested in the KSM125, KSM150 and KSM175 models, looking at the available colours and what each comes with should help to narrow down your choice.
