Product details

"Of Great Work" is a non-fiction book by Rudolf von Tavel that tells the story of the construction of the Mühleberg hydroelectric power plant during World War I. From 1917 to 1920, the Bernese poet observed the intervention in nature as the Aare River was dammed, submerging numerous farms in the floodwaters. Von Tavel narrates the events not from the perspective of the engineers, but from the viewpoint of the affected farmers who sacrificed their homeland for electricity. The fictional narrative reflects the genuine thoughts and feelings of the people confronted with doubts, wonder, and ultimately pride in the construction of the power plant. The story concludes on a reconciliatory note, showing how the village community adapts to the new reality. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the power plant, this work is being reissued in its original, powerful language, offering a deep insight into the social and emotional impacts of a significant technological advancement.
