This story of love and adventure is Amos Oz's own. It takes place on a summer day in Jerusalem in 1947. It all begins when Sumchi, the eleven-year-old hero and first-person narrator, receives a bicycle as a gift. "Once I was given a bicycle and traded it for a train, for which I got a dog, and instead of that, I found a pencil sharpener that I gave away for love. But that's not the whole truth, because love was there all along, even before I gave away my pencil sharpener..." So, it's a tale of fortune and a love story that Oz tells, a story of longing and coming of age, of change and of life that goes on – even after the end of the love between Sumchi and his classmate Esthi.
