With a lot of black humor, Tom Hofland parodies the lost humanity in the workplace in his novel. It is a virtuoso pastiche of crime fiction, horror novel, absurd grotesque, tragicomic office novel, and exaggerated satire. As a quality manager at a large pharmaceutical company, Lute leads a quiet life. However, with the takeover of the company by a Swiss investor, his entire department is suddenly set to be downsized. A bitter pill for Lute: not only does he have to let go of numerous loyal colleagues, but he must also persuade them to resign voluntarily. When Lombard, an independent recruiter, offers his services, Lute is relieved to be able to pass on the responsibility. And indeed: Lombard ensures that one employee after another disappears, allowing Lute to wash his hands of the matter. But with the first deaths, it becomes clear that he has opened the door to a wolf in sheep's clothing.
