Product details

Cultural landscape is a joint work of nature and man The economic and living forms of earlier societies, their cultural achievements, have visibly inscribed themselves in the territory, which thus becomes a carrier of meaning. These 'traces of use of the earth's surface' cannot be left to economic and tourism promotion or nature and landscape protection alone. As material testimonies of history, historic cultural landscapes are closely related to monuments and must be documented and preserved as far as possible. However, no one seems to be responsible for cultural landscapes as a whole - which favors their silent disappearance. Only in the networking of geography, history, landscape architecture, ecology, archaeology and not least the preservation of monuments can one do justice to its complexity and determine its development potential. This publication brings together 13 papers from a conference held at the University of Freiburg i. Üe. The papers explore the topic in all its breadth, from definitions of cultural landscape to its recording, evaluation, and use, to practical examples of its valorization. The aim is to initiate a dialogue between the various disciplines involved and to anchor the importance of historic cultural landscapes in the minds of experts and laypersons alike. The publication marks the start of a new 'Schriftenreihe zur Kulturgüter-Erhaltung' (publication series on the preservation of cultural assets), which is intended to strengthen and expand the interdisciplinary dialogue in the field of cultural heritage preservation.
