Selbstregulation und Selbstkontrolle

The book discusses the psychological aspects of functional self-regulation, which involves processes that mediate between the demands of the context ("reality") on one hand and the requirements of one's own motivational system on the other, leading to viable decisions for a person. Therefore, the motivational factors are analyzed in detail, and the significance of implicit motives is emphasized. Self-regulation is distinguished from self-control, which is the process by which a person enforces their own goals against conflicting motivational tendencies. It is demonstrated that self-control and self-regulation can both contradict and complement each other. Self-control can indeed be a crucial aspect of functional self-regulation. Finally, the relevance of the presented model for clinical psychology and psychotherapy is highlighted.
