Thomas Bernhard remains challenging and fascinating more than a quarter-century after his death. This new edition offers a contemporary perspective on his work, particularly on the posthumously published literary texts, letters, and documents. "My Prizes" and "Goethe Dies," Bernhard's poetry, autobiographical works, literary estate, interviews, and correspondence with the publisher Siegfried Unseld are examined, as well as the rapid rise of the author in the literary canon of classics, the international reception of Bernhard, his relationship with history and National Socialism, his presence in theater, and the intermedial reception of Bernhard in graphic novels, among other aspects.
