Every year in December, a letter with a stamp from the North Pole arrived for Tolkien's children. It contained a handwritten letter and a beautifully illustrated drawing or sketch. The letters came from Santa Claus and told wonderful stories about life at the North Pole: how all the reindeer suddenly broke free and jumped around wildly, how the polar bear climbed to the top of the North Pole to retrieve Santa's hat, and finally fell through the roof right into the dining room, and how they fought battles together against the pesky goblins that lived in the caves beneath the house.
