Behaviorale und psychische Symptome der Demenz (BPSD)

Patients with dementia-related disorders exhibit a range of behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) alongside cognitive symptoms, which further complicate therapy, diagnostics, and care. These symptoms have serious consequences for both the affected individuals and their caregivers and are often difficult to treat in this multimorbid patient group. The aim of the present therapy recommendations from Swiss professional societies is to provide evidence-based guidance, grounded in the clinical experience of Swiss experts, for the treatment of accompanying symptoms of dementia. Considering clinical experience is important because there are insufficient controlled studies for most treatment options. A critical assessment of pharmacotherapeutic interventions is necessary, as medications must be used cautiously in this vulnerable population due to potential side effects. It is also important to consider psychosocial and nursing intervention possibilities and to systematically represent them.
