The British anthropologist Tim Ingold is one of the most original contemporary thinkers. Passionately and clearly, he presents in this slim volume the manifesto of an anthropology guided by the question: How should we live? In a world on a knife's edge, this question concerns everyone. According to Ingold, it is no longer sufficient to accumulate knowledge, as mere knowledge fixes and stifles thinking in concepts and models. What is lacking is wisdom. To be wise, for Ingold, means to venture into the world and expose oneself to what is happening there, to be attentive, to shed the cloak of omniscience, to take others seriously, and indeed, to learn from them. Anthropology gives voice to the wisdom and experience of people all over the world. A new anthropology, as Ingold advocates, should no longer conduct studies about people but study with them what forms of being human are possible. This is also because we can no longer afford to forgo their wisdom in our global crisis.
