Not all cat litter is the same. If you’re a cat owner, you’ll know that cats can be very picky about their bathroom habits, so it’s important to choose the right litter and clean the litter box regularly. Here’s a quick guide to cat litter and litter boxes.
The type of litter and box can make or break your cat’s bathroom behaviours. Doesn’t everyone want to have a comfy hideaway to do their «business»? Here’s all you need to know to keep your cat happy and your home clean.
This quick guide will make you and your cat happy.
As a general rule, high-quality cat litter clumps together into balls when it’s wet, neutralises odours, is easy to dispose of and is environmentally friendly. You should also take further aspects such as dust formation, weight, availability and price into account. Have a look at these tips and you'll find it easier to choose the right litter for your furry friend.
Bentonite clay litter
Bentonite is natural clay that's used for cat litter, as well as in the cosmetics and food industry. Bentonite clay has the advantage of clumping in the presence of moisture, making it ideal for cat litter. However, it can be very dusty when filled into the litter box and has led to environmental concerns, as bentonite clay comes from strip mines. This litter is not biodegradable.
Silica litter can absorb a lot of liquid, which means that odours are quickly absorbed, the weight is kept to a minimum and there is hardly any dust when filling it into the cat litter box. Unfortunately, this type of litter doesn't clump well. Your best bet is to try it out yourself, as all cats have their very own preferences.
Cat litter made of wood or plant fibres clumps well, binds odours quickly, doesn't create dust, is easy to transport, environmentally friendly and biodegradable. However, as the litter is so lightweight, parts of it can get stuck to your pet's paws and distributed in your apartment. Also, if your cat does a lot of scratching, litter may be catapulted over the sides of the box and land on your floor. In this case, I recommend you to buy a covered litter box and place litter mats around the box.
The advantage of this litter is that it neutralises odours right in the box, is very light, clumps well, is easy to dispose of and is biodegradable and clean. The only downside is that corn litter is hard to find, as it’s a relatively new product. But it’s worth looking out for as, it’s a highly recommended allrounder.
With Josty's intelligent silica litter, you can tell if your cat is sick. The litter indicates kidney, urinary tract or liver problems by changing its colour after your cat has used the litter box. It's also antibacterial, neutralises bad odours and is eco-friendly.
Intelligent silica cat litter with health test. This silica litter is designed to monitor the health of your cat. It changes colour as soon as the urine of your cat shows signs of kidney, urinary tract or liver problems.

Not only what goes inside it, but also the litter box itself is important. This is where your cat will spend quite a bit of time.
Covered vs uncovered litter boxes
The problem with uncovered litter boxes is that they don't trap odours and litter might spread around the box. But you can avoid this by getting the right cat litter (see my comments above). Covered litter boxes often seem strange for cats at first, as the entrance and exit are in the same place. If your cat is only just getting used to a cat box, this option might be a challenge, as cats don't like to feel trapped.
Special litter boxes
On Galaxus, you can buy the Litter Kwitter cat toilet training system. You’re wondering what this is? I’ll let you see for yourself; Litter Kwitter’s demo video is very amusing:
Another product that's available with us is the self-cleaning litter box by Scoop Free. The Scoop Free might be slightly more expensive than other options, but it only needs to be cleaned once every few weeks, as the automatic rake system sweeps waste into the covered compartment 20 minutes after your cat has used the litter box. However, keep in mind that this litter box only takes special cat litter (also available from us) and you need to get your cat used to this system.
Toilette Original (Uncovered, Self-cleaning)
Making hands dirty has an end here: The self-cleaning cat toilet with intelligent raking system. Thanks to the disposable toilet bowls, you don't have to see, touch or smell unpleasant dirt. Cleaning the litter tray has never been easier.
The type of box, as well as its size, shape and even location in your house can make or break your cat’s bathroom behaviours.
More gadgets and accessories
In addition to cat litter and cat litter boxes, there are other ways to make cats feel more comfortable when they're doing their «business». The great thing is that these accessories will also make sure there’s less for you to clean up. Cat litter additives add a refreshing smell, while a cat sand shovel makes cleaning a litter easier and makes it easy to remove clumps without disposing of too much unused litter.
Litter mats are great to keep the area around the litter box clean and make sure your cat doesn’t carry the litter through your apartment. Disposal systems such as the Litter Locker offer a professional way to store and dispose of cat litter. This avoids bad odours from spreading and keeps you from having to add the cat litter to the rubbish bin, as this container only needs to be emptied every two weeks.
