Under the motto – or better, the hashtag – «the journey begins at home», the young label from Zurich has been producing interior objects and accessories since 2012. Built on contemporary design and traditional craftsmanship, their carpets have gained recognition in Switzerland and around the world. The collections of carpets and accessories are developed under the creative direction of Nadja Stäubli, the founder of Schoenstaub. An experienced photographer, she designs the wide range of prints. With a proud 1.6 million woven dots per square metre, Schoenstaub carpets are made of artificial silk and manufactured in Teheran with a Swiss weaving machine.
In the early days of Schoenstaub, their choice of colour, attention to detail and photo-realistic motifs already fascinated me. I was all the more pleased to see their collection «Tropicana» at the «Salone Satellite» exhibition in 2016. This exhibition is part of the world's most important yearly furniture trade fair «Salone del Mobile» in Milan, which offers a platform for undiscovered talents to present their work. Making it to this exhibition means reaching an international audience and paving the way for international breakthrough. Thais is exactly what happened in the case of Schoenstaub.
Today, I come across their carpets in many prominent places – the 25 Hours Hotel in Zurich and a club near Langstrasse, for instance, are where I made my most recent discoveries. The latter has decorated its walls with the «Nebula» collection and made small holes into the carpets. A scandalous thing to do to such galactic carpets! But also a clever idea; tiny LED lights are hidden behind each hole, making the stars on the carpet shine bright. The perfect setting for a dreamy night.
You can also admire Schoenstaub carpets at the «Swiss Design Lounge» in Museum für Gestaltung Zürich where they’re exhibited alongside other Swiss design classics. The Design Lounge is a place to linger and explore – it’s definitely worth a visit!
The «Tropicana» collection brings Caribbean flair into your everyday life with colourful palm tree prints. These carpets round off your reading corner and are the perfect finishing touch between floor and furniture. Available in round or rectangular shapes and in a range of sizes, these soft and fuzz-free carpets are designed in Zurich and produced in Iran. Other textiles of the label are manufactured in Europe and the US.
Schoenstaub carpets are like a picture on the wall: They are statement pieces that stand for themselves. And they go with any furnishing style. To create a tropical paradise at home, go with natural materials such as bamboo or rattan – or the complete opposite; metal furniture. This contrast can also look great. In fact, there's almost no limit to the options these carpets give you.
