Nebraska, mid-19th century: Mary Bee Cuddy lives god-fearing and alone in a small border town in the endless expanses of the Wild West. The struggle against the relentless nature and loneliness is hard for the women of the pioneers. When three farmer women lose their minds for different reasons, the poor community commissions Mary to accompany the three women back to civilization in the East, where a Methodist community under the care of Altha Carter can take care of them. Right at the beginning of her journey Mary meets Outlaw Briggs, for whom she saves his life and makes a promise for money to accompany and protect her all the way.
