Richard Laymon was born in Chicago on January 14, 1947. He received a BA in English Literature from Willamette University in Oregon and an MA from Loyola University in Los Angeles. He earned his living first as a teacher, librarian and expert for a lawyer's office. His reputation in the scene grew steadily when he died unexpectedly of a heart attack on Valentine's Day, February 14, 2001.
