Three wise men from the Orient appear to King Herod (Claude Rains) because a star has led them to a newborn child. Herod recalls the prophecy of a prophet that the new king of Israel will be born in Bethlehem. Out of fear for his own power, he "prophylactically" has all newborn children murdered. Nevertheless, Josef (Robert Loggia) and Maria (Dorothy McGuire) manage to flee to Egypt with their infant.
When Herod is dead, Jesus (Max von Sydow) returns to his homeland. Soon Pontius Pilate (Telly Savalas) will be the new Roman governor of Judea, but Jesus will meet him much later. First he is baptized by John the Baptist (Charlton Heston), which also brings this prison, is tempted by the devil (Donald Pleasence) in the desert, but resists, heals Lazarus (Van Heflin) and later flocks his disciples and the apostles around him.
