On 6 July 2000 the Polish pianist Wladyslaw Szpilman dies in Warsaw, 88 years old. Two years before his death, his memoirs appeared under the title "Das wunderbare Überleben - Warschauer Erinnerungen 1939-1945" ("The Wonderful Survival - Warsaw Memoirs 1939-1945"); a book as impressive as Anne Frank's diaries, which traces a Jewish fate during the Second World War. Based on this, Roman Polanski has shot his new film: THE PIANIST was awarded a golden palm in Cannes and is a milestone in the Polish director's career so far. The film begins and ends with the protagonist playing the piano. In between, in slightly sepia-coloured pictures, the almost unbelievable story of one who lived in the Warsaw Ghetto and got away with it unfolds. It's not a nice and certainly not a whitewashing story - but it's a movie that despite many quiet moments of under the hood.more
