Description

30x zoom lens with integrated ZEIss quality:

Experience the result of more than 150 years of ZEIss expertise in the field of precision optics: This 24-720 mm lens1 provides natural, pin-sharp images with high contrast from every perspective - whether for portrait, close-up or landscape photography. In addition, the ZEIss T* anti-reflective multi-coating reduces ghost effects and light reflections on the lens surface.

Exmor RCMOS sensor for particularly high sensitivity:

The more light a sensor is exposed to, the more brilliant the images become. The Exmor RCMOS sensor with 18.2 megapixels effective and backlighting absorbs four times more light than conventional sensors. It is also twice as sensitive to light and reduces image noise using Sony A/D converter technology.

Bionz X for more detail and less noise:

Using detail reproduction, diffraction reduction, and area-specific noise reduction technologies, the Bionz X image processor converts data from the Exmor RCMOS sensor into high-resolution images. This combination enables extremely precise and realistic shots with even more lifelike colours and textures.

Fast Wi-Fi®/NFC connection for easy sharing:

Integrated Near Field Communication (NFC) technology lets you quickly establish a Wi-Fi connection to Android mobile devices. Share your favorite photos and videos in seconds by transferring them directly from your camera to friends' and family's smartphones or Tablets2. And with PlayMemories Mobile, you can even control the camera remotely from your mobile device.

180° tiltable LC display for simple image compositions:

The high-resolution LCD display on the back of the camera can be tilted up to 180 degrees. So even when you are in front of the camera, you can easily check the image composition on the LCD display before you make a selfie, for example. And also for shots from a frog's perspective, this flexible LC display enables convenient handling and positioning.

ISO light sensitivity (auto)
i

ISO light sensitivity (auto)

The American Standards Association (ASA) and the Deutsches Institut für Normung (DIN) film speed standards have been combined into the ISO standards. The current International Standard for measuring the speed of color negative film is ISO 5800:1987 from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Related standards ISO 6:1993 and ISO 2240:2003 define scales for speeds of black-and-white negative film and color reversal film. This system defines both an arithmetic and a logarithmic scale, combining the previously separate ASA and DIN systems.
Commonly, the logarithmic speed is omitted; for example, "ISO 100" denotes ISO 100/21°.

ISO light sensitivity (manual)
i

ISO light sensitivity (manual)

The ISO 5800 standard defines the light sensitivity of film material.
For both scales: the higher the number, the more light-sensitive the film. For linear ASA scaling, a double value corresponds to twice the sensitivity. In the logarithmic DIN scale, an increase of 3° corresponds to a doubling.
In photography, doubling the light sensitivity of the film material means that under given lighting conditions the exposure time can be halved to avoid camera shake or the lens can be closed one f-stop further to achieve a greater depth of field.

Camera lens properties

i

Camera lens properties

A camera lens (also known as photographic lens, objective lens or photographic objective) is an optical lens or assembly of lenses used in conjunction with a camera body and mechanism to make images of objects either on photographic film or on other media capable of storing an image chemically or electronically.
While in principle a simple convex lens will suffice, in practice a compound lens made up of a number of optical lens elements is required to correct (as much as possible) the many optical aberrations that arise. Some aberrations will be present in any lens system. It is the job of the lens designer to balance these out and produce a design that is suitable for photographic use and possibly mass production.
A lens may be permanently fixed to a camera, or it may be interchangeable with lenses of different focal lengths, apertures, and other properties.

More information...

Focal length (35 mm film equivalent)
i

Focal length (35 mm film equivalent)

In photography, the 35 mm equivalent focal length is a measure that indicates the angle of view of a particular combination of a camera lens and film or sensor size. The term is useful because most photographers experienced with interchangeable lenses are most familiar with the 35 mm film format.

Maximum aperture
i

Maximum aperture

Aperture is a (normally mechanical) device on cameras which can be used to change the light transmission through the optical system (lens). It is usually designed as a lamella screen (also known as an iris screen), in which circularly arranged lamella sheets shift into one another in such a way that the light transmission becomes narrower or wider and thus the incident light beam becomes smaller or larger. The iris is positioned in the beam path in such a way that it only acts as an aperture iris diaphragm and not as a field of view diaphragm.

Image stabilization
i

Image stabilization

Image stabilization (IS) is a family of techniques used to reduce blurring associated with the motion of a camera during exposure. Specifically, it compensates for pan and tilt (angular movement, equivalent to yaw and pitch) of a camera or other imaging device. It is used in image-stabilized binoculars, still and video cameras, and astronomical telescopes. With still cameras, camera shake is particularly problematic at slow shutter speeds or with long focal length (telephoto) lenses. With video cameras, camera shake causes visible frame-to-frame jitter in the recorded video. In astronomy, the problem of lens-shake is added to by variations in the atmosphere over time, which cause the apparent positions of objects to change.

Display properties

i

Display properties

A display device is an output device for presentation of information for visual, tactile or auditory reception, acquired, stored, or transmitted in various forms. When the input information is supplied as to electrical signal, the display is called electronic display. Electronic displays are available for presentation of visual, tactile and auditory information.

Display size
i

Display size

The size of a display is typically given as the distance between two opposite screen corners. One problem with this method is that it does not distinguish between the aspect ratios of monitors with identical diagonal sizes, in spite of the fact that a shape of a given diagonal span's area decreases as it becomes less square. For example, a 4:3 21" monitor has an area of ~211 square inches, while a 16:9 21" widescreen has an area of only ~188 square inches.

Viewfinder

In photography, a viewfinder is what the photographer looks through to compose, and in many cases to focus, the picture. Most viewfinders are separate, and suffer parallax, while the single-lens reflex camera lets the viewfinder use the main optical system. Viewfinders are used in many cameras of different types: still and movie, film, analog and digital. A zoom camera usually zooms its finder in sync with its lens, one exception being rangefinder cameras.

Focusing

i

Focusing

In geometrical optics, a focus, also called an image point, is the point where light rays originating from a point on the object converge. Although the focus is conceptually a point, physically the focus has a spatial extent, called the blur circle. This non-ideal focusing may be caused by aberrations of the imaging optics. In the absence of significant aberrations, the smallest possible blur circle is the Airy disc, which is caused by diffraction from the optical system's aperture. Aberrations tend to get worse as the aperture diameter increases, while the Airy circle is smallest for large apertures.

In computing, JPEG is a commonly used method of lossy compression for digital photography (image). The degree of compression can be adjusted, allowing a selectable tradeoff between storage size and image quality. JPEG typically achieves 10:1 compression with little perceptible loss in image quality.

JPEG compression is used in a number of image file formats. JPEG/Exif is the most common image format used by digital cameras and other photographic image capture devices; along with JPEG/JFIF, it is the most common format for storing and transmitting photographic images on the World Wide Web. These format variations are often not distinguished, and are simply called JPEG.

Battery-operated

A rechargeable battery or storage battery is a group of one or more electrochemical cells. They are known as secondary cells because their electrochemical reactions are electrically reversible. Rechargeable batteries come in many different shapes and sizes, ranging anything from a button cell to megawatt systems connected to stabilize an electrical distribution network. Several different combinations of chemicals are commonly used, including: lead-acid, nickel cadmium (NiCd), nickel metal hydride (NiMH), lithium ion (Li-ion), and lithium ion polymer (Li-ion polymer).

Rechargeable batteries have lower total cost of use and environmental impact than disposable batteries. Some rechargeable battery types are available in the same sizes as disposable types. Rechargeable batteries have higher initial cost, but can be recharged very cheaply and used many times.
